Love of Truth asked:
And if any of you say Satanism or Devil worship, there is no way in hell you are getting ten points. I have not only listen to the song, read the lyrics, but I have also played it. I have a good idea what I think the song is about but I want to hear your opinions. Please do not give me a source. Simply write down your opinion by having listened the lyrics.
LoneStar, from what I have been told Colitas is the buds from the Marijuana plant. but I don’t think the song is sole about drugs but it is about addiction of one kind or another and not being about to escape it. I still think people are missing one obvious interpretation.
Tay Tay, you made one very good point, in that this stop was a shortcut of types, that if he just went a little further maybe he would have found a better life. His head growing heavy and his sight going dim is an expression of his lack of foresight or thought.
Ok people hint, what are the steely knives? It actually could be more than one thing, a double metaphor.
Jerem2, if i could take away 10 points from you I would.

Honestly, the song Hotel California is about drinking and drug-use in the late 60’s /early 70’s.
its about freedom. let the illegal aliens come here and stay free at the hotel calif.
I don’t think it has as much meaning as all the rumors out there say. It is simply about being engulfed in the Southern California lifestyle and never being able to break away from it.
Hotel California touched on many themes, including innocence (and the loss thereof), the dangers, temptations, and transient nature of fame, shallow relationships, divorce and loss of love, the end results of manifest destiny, and the “American Dream”.

Well I have the song on my ipod. I have not given it very much thought until now thanks to you. I’m guess its about trying to take a shortcut in life (he sees a hotel in the distance when could have gone further to get a better one)The shortcut could be like a hideout (drugs, alcohol, sex, ect.) He knows he did something wrong but he can’t get out of it. He needs help but he can’t get out. I know that sounded weird but I tried!
It’s about drug addiction , and the idiot DJ in my wedding decided to change my first song that I danced with my husband , from ” can I have this kiss forever” To hotel California .
I am trying to convince my self that it is about love ever since
i dont think anyone will eer truly know what the song “actually” means but like everything it can be interpreted differently by everyone, but i think its about a lifestyle that you personally chose to enter into and now you cant get out of… yeah for some thats drugs and alcohol and probably the most common interpretation… but for others it could be an abusive relationship…. each to their own interpretation… you stuck…. it feels like the only way out is death… you can check out anytime you want you just cant ever leave (ok probably didnt get the lyrics exact but i cat be bothered checking the song or looking them up and you know what i mean)
u fool d lyrics dont give shit. if u hear d song played backwards it says i love satan. im tellin u coz i’ve heard it. hotel california was built in california. it was d first satanic church ever in d world. and dey have their own satanic bible. thers more if u wanna know contact me, i’ll tell u.

Why do people now days bring the Devil into everything? The song was about addiction to drugs! During the early 70′ Drug use was at a all time high for both Rock and Country singers!
